all my life i’ve been told that i’m the smart one
but there’s a simple thing i still can’t seem to grasp
Jesus said the rule is seventy times seven
but you and i blew through those times so fast
i hate it that i couldn’t stay
but forgiveness has to mean something bigger
than sitting there in front of your trigger
so for me it’s shedding a tear when i drive through your hometown
missing your sister and wishing i could hug your mom
letting go of anger and trying just to find peace now
best i can tell that’s what forgiveness is
i know i’m not allowed to make my own definition
but what i thought it meant just ain’t an option here
i can’t say “it’s okay i know you love me baby”
cause it ain’t love when there’s an element of fear
i’m sorry it turned out this way
but now that i’m out from under your hands
when i try to forgive you i finally can
cause for me it’s laughing out loud when i remember our old inside jokes
turning the radio up when i know it’s one you like
trusting that God is watching over you and that He knows
best i can tell that’s what forgiveness is
i guess it’s unconventional to forgive as you leave
but forgive and forget’s harder when there’s scars you can see
so for me it’s laughing out loud when i remember our old inside jokes
turning the radio up when i know it’s one you like
trusting that God is watching over you and that He knows
best i can tell that’s what forgiveness is
yeah for me that’s what forgiveness is
that’s all i got to give you,
so i hope that’s what forgiveness is
