when i saw you on the street that time
i probably should’ve walked away
but i pretended i was waiting for someone
so i could watch you in your conversation
it’d been so long since i’d seen you laugh
so i stood and stared like i never thought i’d do
i just can’t stand to lose what i have left of you
you keep showing up in my dreams at night
they turn to nightmares when i wake and you disappear
still it feels like just enough to keep me breathing for a while
so i usually fall asleep hoping to meet you there
i just can’t stand to lose what i have left of you
cause i can’t heal these wounds when i’m bereft of you
no, i can’t stand to lose what i have left of you
sometimes it all comes back in a flash
what you did, what i said, all the reasons it ended
but some days even though i remember
i can’t understand why i ever let it
i’m almost in tears, sure i didn’t get the job
and all of a sudden i can hear your old words
“you’re a failure who can’t take being told she’s wrong”
and like back then i start believing it’s true
but you were once everything i wanted in life
before you fell and brought the rest of my world down too
and i just can’t stand to lose what i have left of you
cause i can’t heal these wounds when i’m bereft of you
no, i can’t stand to lose what i have left of you
